How to Improve Breaststroke Timing: 6 Drills

A breaststroker can have a strong pull and a powerful kick, yet still feel stuck in the water. The usual reason is timing. Learning how to improve breaststroke timing is less about working harder and more about putting each action in the right place: pull, breathe, kick, glide.

For young swimmers, that sequence can feel slow at first. It should. A rushed breaststroke creates drag, drops the hips, and turns a coordinated stroke into separate movements. When timing improves, the stroke feels calmer, more connected, and noticeably faster.

The Breaststroke Timing Sequence

Breaststroke works best when the body moves forward in a repeated cycle. The arms begin the movement, the breath happens as the hands recover, the legs finish the movement, and the swimmer holds a streamlined line long enough to travel.

A useful cue is: pull, breathe, kick, glide. Every swimmer should be able to say the words in rhythm with their stroke. The pull starts while the body is long. As the hands sweep in and the head rises naturally, the swimmer takes a quick breath. The hands shoot forward, then the heels recover and the kick snaps together behind the body. Once the feet close, the swimmer is in streamline and glides.

The key detail is that the kick should finish after the hands have started moving forward. If the arms and legs push at the same time, they cancel out the chance to travel in a long, narrow position. Instead of getting two clean accelerations, the swimmer creates one short, messy burst followed by drag.

Why Young Swimmers Rush the Stroke

Rushing is often a confidence issue, not a fitness issue. A swimmer who worries about getting air may lift their head early, pull too wide, and start kicking before their hands return forward. The result is a stroke that looks busy but does not move very far.

Some swimmers also mistake fast arms for fast swimming. In breaststroke, the fastest swimmers are not constantly moving. They accelerate through the pull and kick, then use the glide to carry speed forward. The glide is not a pause or a rest. It is the reward for a well-timed kick and a tight body line.

Mobility can also affect timing. Limited ankle turnout, tight hips, or difficulty bringing the heels up without lifting the knees can make the kick late or uneven. In that situation, telling a swimmer simply to “kick faster” will not solve the problem. They may need to slow down, improve their body position, and develop a kick they can repeat correctly.

How to Improve Breaststroke Timing With Better Cues

Coaching cues should be short enough for a swimmer to remember during a length. Avoid giving five corrections at once. Pick the one cue that matches what is breaking down.

For a swimmer who kicks too early, try: “Hands first, feet second.” This reminds them that the arms must reach forward before the kick closes.

For a swimmer who takes a long breath and loses speed, use: “Quick breath, eyes down.” The breath should happen when the shoulders rise from the pull, then the head returns to a neutral position as the hands extend.

For a swimmer who never glides, count the stroke rhythm aloud: “Pull, breathe, kick, one.” The word “one” represents the streamlined travel after the feet snap together. As timing improves, the glide length will depend on the swimmer’s speed, race distance, and skill level. A beginner may need a clear count to learn patience. An experienced racer may use a shorter glide to maintain tempo. The goal is not the longest possible glide. The goal is a glide that carries speed without stalling.

Six Drills That Build Breaststroke Rhythm

These drills are most effective when swimmers complete short, focused repeats with feedback between attempts. Quality matters more than adding extra distance with poor habits.

1. Pull, breathe, shoot drill

Use a breaststroke pull and breath, then shoot the hands into a tight streamline. Do not kick. This isolates the front half of the stroke and teaches swimmers to get their head down as their hands go forward. Keep the legs long and quiet behind the body.

2. Two kicks, one pull drill

Take one breaststroke pull, then complete two breaststroke kicks while keeping the arms extended in streamline after the first kick. This helps swimmers feel that the kick creates forward travel. It also exposes a weak or uneven kick quickly, since there is nowhere for the arms to hide it.

3. Kick on the back

Float on the back with arms at the sides or in streamline. Bring the heels toward the hips, turn the feet outward, then press the water back and snap the legs together. Swimmers can see whether their knees are pulling too far apart and feel whether both feet finish together.

4. Breaststroke with a glide count

Swim regular breaststroke, but hold streamline for a count of one or two after every kick. The count should be consistent, not dramatic. If a swimmer sinks or slows down completely, shorten the count slightly and improve the kick connection before extending the glide again.

5. Three strokes, six kicks

Swim three full breaststroke strokes, then six breaststroke kicks with the arms in streamline. Repeat across the pool. This drill challenges swimmers to keep their hips high while reinforcing a compact heel recovery and a complete kick finish.

6. Breaststroke with a pause at extension

After each pull and breath, pause briefly when the hands are fully extended forward. Then recover the heels and kick. That small pause makes the correct order obvious: hands reach, feet recover, legs snap, body travels. Once the pattern is reliable, remove the pause while keeping the same sequence.

Body Position Makes Timing Easier

Timing is difficult when the body is not balanced. If the hips sit low, swimmers often kick downward instead of backward. If the head stays lifted after the breath, the legs sink and the swimmer feels pressure to rush into the next pull.

Encourage swimmers to press their chest slightly into the water as the hands extend. This is not a deep dive downward. It is a controlled return to a long line, with the eyes looking down and slightly forward. The hips should follow near the surface as the kick finishes.

The heel recovery should stay narrow and quick. Knees can bend, but they should not drive forward under the body like a bicycle pedal. A wide knee recovery increases resistance and makes it harder to time the kick after the arm extension. For many young athletes, a smaller, cleaner kick produces more speed than a bigger kick with poor shape.

Practice Timing at the Right Speed

Slow practice is valuable when a swimmer is learning the sequence. It gives the brain time to connect the correct movements. But swimmers should not stay slow forever. Once the pattern is consistent, add speed in small steps.

Start with short repeats where technique can stay sharp, such as 25s with plenty of rest. Ask the swimmer to focus on one measurable goal: fewer strokes, a cleaner glide, or keeping the head down before the kick finishes. Then use a few faster repeats to see whether the timing holds when effort rises.

Parents can help by praising what is visible and specific. Instead of saying, “Swim faster,” try, “I saw your hands get forward before your kick,” or “That glide looked long and strong.” Specific encouragement helps young swimmers understand that progress comes from skill, not just effort.

When Timing Changes for Racing

A breaststroke rhythm is not identical for every event. In a longer race, swimmers may use a slightly more patient stroke to protect efficiency and control breathing. In a sprint, the tempo rises and the glide becomes shorter. Even then, the order does not change. The arms still recover forward before the kick finishes, and the body still reaches a tight line after each kick.

Competitive swimmers should also pay attention to timing off walls. A strong pullout and breakout can set up the first stroke, but rushing the first cycle often ruins the momentum from the turn. Train the breakout rhythm deliberately: surface in line, begin the pull, breathe naturally, recover forward, then finish the kick into the next glide.
